You can pick up a new NEF pretty cheap, older H&R Toppers still sell under $100.

The biggest problem in loading .410 slugs is finding a decent slug to load.

I just loaded some using 148 Grain.38 Hollow Base Wadcutters in a shotcup. The weight-forward design tends to keep the thing from tumbling, at least for 50 yards. The biggest negatives for that arrangement is the 148 Grains is lighter than I would like, and those bullets are swaged from dead-soft lead. A little harder and they would suit the job better.

Another possibility is a bullet cast for the .41 Long Colt. Bullets for the Colt came in two styles. One was a full bore diameter bullet with a heel that fit inside the casing, just like the .22 Rimfires, That bullet was externally lubed and wouldn’t be much good from a smoothbored shotgun. The other style was a hollow based, internally lubed bullet, about .37” diameter. In the Colt, the skirt formed by the hollow base would expand and engage the rifling. (Works great with Blackpowder, not so good with smokeless. Red Dot or Bullseye are the only two powders I’ve found that are fast enough to properly expand the base, but they are too fast to get much velocity). Anyhow, if you can find some of those bullets, used in a shotcup they might just make a good .410 slug. Not looking for expanding skirt here, just the weight-forward design. Lyman made a mold in that configuration, discontinued now. About 185 Grains. I sold mine when I quit loading the .41 Colt. Rapine Molds currently makes a mold similar to the old Lyman, expensive though.
